Oilers road woes continue in loss to Wings

It seems as though there's no place like home for the Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers fell 4-2 to the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday night, dropping to 0-7-1 in their last eight games away from Rexall Place. Sam Gagner scored twice for the Oil (21-28-5) to erase a two-goal deficit in the third period, but Drew Miller and Henrik Zetterberg put the Red Wings (36-17-2) back in front. Detroit has now won 18 straight games on home ice.

Oilers head coach Tom Renney says his team just didn't play a good enough road game.

"I thought we gave a very good team, if not the best club team in the world, an opportunity to come right after us and control the game from the get go," said Renney. "The way we responded to coming back and getting ourselves tied was almost 'fools gold,' because we thought we had done enough and clearly you don't ever do enough against Detroit until you beat them."

There were fireworks early on in this one, with Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader fighting Oilers forward Ryan Jones after a hit on Ian White at the six minute mark. With Eric Belanger in the box for holding the stick later in the period, Detroit's Johan Franzen tipped a White shot past Nikolai Khabibulin for the game's opening goal at 13:18.

The Oilers almost got one back in the closing seconds when Taylor Hall made a power move towards the Red Wings net, but Belanger put the puck just wide as time expired.

Detroit's Cory Emmerton added to his club's lead at the 2:45 mark of the second period when he hopped on a loose puck at the top of the Edmonton crease and jammed it into the top corner for his sixth goal of the year. The game wasn't over yet though - less than 10 minutes later, on Edmonton's sixth shot of the night, Sam Gagner was sent in on a breakaway and beat a poke-checking Joey Macdonald with a nice backhand deke to make it 2-1.

Gagner scored again at the 8:23 mark of the third period, this time on the power play, jumping on a puck in the Wings zone and putting a quick shot past Macdonald to tie the game at 2-2. With that goal, the 22-year-old Oilers forward now has 14 points in his last four games.

"I thought we got off to a pretty good start for the first five or ten minutes, and then for whatever reason, we flattened out and just couldn't sustain any pressure," said Gagner. "It was good that we tied it up there, but right after that again we just let it go. It's something we've got to learn from and get better as we go along here."

A lucky goal by Drew Miller put the Red Wings back in front just 2:23 later and they wouldn't look back. Nikolai Khabibulin made a save on a Justin Abdelkader shot but couldn't track down the rebound, and Miller eventually tapped it in at 10:46 to make it 3-2. Henrik Zetterberg scored about four minutes later, his first goal since January 16th, to round out the scoring.

Khabibulin gave up four goals on 30 shots, while Joey Macdonald made 15 saves for the win. The Oilers were 1-for-7 on the power play and managed to kill off three of Detroit's four man advantages on the night.

The Oilers now travel to the nation's capital to face the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon - you can hear that game live on 630 CHED. (jk)

CTF awaits Alberta's next budget

It remains to be seen if your bank account will be affected by the province's next budget with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation keeping a close eye on things.

Alberta Director Scott Hennig says we need to know what size the deficit is going to be, and what methods Premier Redford is taking to rein it in.

"Just as late as last August, when she was running for the leadership and to be Premier of the province, she promised that she intended to balance the budget without raising taxes," remarked Hennig. "And I think a lot of people took her at her word and are hoping she sticks to that promise."

Hennig points out former Premier Ed Stelmach failed to balance the budget by 2012 as promised. Adding it will be interesting to see just how big this year's budget will be.

"Had the government limited its spending growth to about 4.5 percent a year instead of 8.5 percent a year, starting when we were debt free in 2005, we'd be running about a four billion dollar surplus this year instead of a three billion dollar deficit."

We'll find out on Thursday if cigarette, alcohol or income taxes in the province will be going up to help balance things out. (td)

Mounties were called out to a rural property at about 5:30am on Wednesday following reports of a disturbance. They say a man allegedly assaulted the owner of the property and did some damage to the property itself before barricading himself in a residence there. Through further investigation, officers determined that the man inside was armed and was a threat to police, leading officers to secure the area and close down nearby highways.

In the afternoon, Mounties made contact with the suspect but couldn't get him to leave the residence. When officers finally entered the home, they found the suspect dead of self-inflicted wounds.

Investigators say this incident is not related to the shootings in Killam on Tuesday. (jk)

City of Edmonton deals with booming population

Edmonton is growing so fast, it's even catching the big wigs at city hall off guard.

The latest census numbers are out, and it turns out our population is growing even faster than the city's chief economist predicted. Edmonton has seen 11.2 per cent growth over the last five years. That number is even higher if you factor in outer communities in the metro Edmonton area. But despite the rapid growth, chief economist John Rose doesn't expect it to cause problems with housing or development.

Slave Lake fire investigation

The RCMP hopes that talking to six people who were in the area of Slave Lake the day before fire destroyed a third of that town last May, might help them in their arson investigation. These are people Mounties think might have seen something suspicious.

The following were all seen on May 14, 2012:

Two men on ATV's, about 15 kilometers east of town, on the north side of highway 2. The ATV's were Honda's, one red, one yellow.

Someone in a green Dodge Neon parked on the side of highway 2, just outside of town,

Anyone associated with a older white Ford pickup, seen near the Flat Top Observation Tower.

Two people, who flagged down firefghters to tell them about burning brush east of the weigh scale. They may have been in a white vehicle.

Anyone with information, can call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. (efmb)
